Let Them Flip Burgers

11/15/2007

I’ve been in the auto parts business for the last 10 years. In that time, I have worked for an independent, a national retailer and now, a smaller program-group affiliated chain. The trend of getting rid of knowledgeable people and replacing them with “Joe Blow Computer Geek” is really bad. What’s worse is the management these stores are getting. Why not let knowledgeable counter people with some common sense manage these stores and let the idiots flip burgers?

Auto parts stores don't pay enough money to retain knowledgeable parts guys. What do you expect?

I AGREE, THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR KNOWLEDGEABLE COUNTERMAN, BUT HOW DO THOSE COUNTERMAN BECOME KNOWLEDGEABLE? THEY GET THAT KNOWLEDGE FROM ON THE JOB EXPERIENCE, ALTHOUGH I AGREE THAT A COMPUTER SHOULD NOT TAKE THE PLACE OF AN EXPERIENCED COUNTERMAN, IF YOU NEVER LET A NEW GUY/GAL IN HOW ARE YOU GONNA REPLACE THE ONES THAT ARE LEAVING. BUT IT TAKES MORE THAN JUST SOMEONE WHO CAN PUNCH SOME BUTTONS ON A KEYBOARD TO WORK A PARTS COUNTER!

I AGREE. GRANTED THESE COMPUTERS DO MAKE WORK MORE SIMPLE YES.YET YOU STILL CAN'T SUBSTITUTE A GOOD KNOWLEDGEABLE COUNTERMAN WITH SOMEONE WHO KNOWS LITTLE ABOUT CARS , PARTS & OR THE AUTO PARTS INDUSTRY. WE EXPERIENCED EMPLOYEES ARE THE ONES WHO KEEP THE CUSTOMERS COMING BACK NOT THE COMPUTERS!
