This is not an uncommon problem on any vehicle. The A/C compressor is trying to lock up. This can be caused by several different issues. It can be the electric fans are not cooling the condenser causing a higher than acceptable head pressure and causing the compressor to lock up. Also, there are times when idle air control valves go bad and do not adjust the idle of the engine to compensate for the pull the compressor has on the engine.
