Every month, Counterman’s “Guess the Car” contest challenges our readers to solve an automotive riddle, for a chance to win $100. And each month, we receive hundreds of responses from aftermarket professionals trying to guess the model of the vehicle depicted.
The correct answer for the June contest is the [Chevrolet] Trax.
The winner for June is Fred Lutz, a commercial pro at Advance Auto Parts in Anderson, South Carolina. Lutz provided the correct answer, and the Counterman staff chose him at random.
Now, let’s get to know June’s “Guess the Car” champion.
CM: How long have you been working in the auto parts business?
FL: Thirty-six years.
CM: What do you like most about your job?
FL: I like it when a customer comes in off the street and asks me my advice and they actually listen to me, and then they come back and thank me for giving them advice on how to repair their car. That just makes my day.
CM: So that actually happens?
FL [Laughs]: Occasionally it does.
CM: What’s the strangest question a customer has asked you?
FL: It really doesn’t have anything to do with auto parts. When I was working [at an auto parts store] in Florida, the owner had just built us a brand new building, and this old guy walks in the door and says, “Where’s the beer cooler?” That has to be the strangest question I’ve had on this job.
CM: Was he joking?
FL: No, he was dead serious. We told him he had the wrong building, because we were next door to a convenience store.
CM: What’s the coolest car you’ve ever owned or worked on?
FL: Back in the ‘80s, a friend of mind had a ‘75 Vega with a four-cylinder [engine], and we dropped a 350 in it. At the time, that was probably the coolest thing I’ve ever done. That thing would fly.
CM: Do you have any interesting hobbies? What do you do for fun?
FL: I don’t know if it’s interesting, but we do like to go out on the lake with the boat and swim around, just to get away from everything. Other than that, doing yardwork is probably my favorite thing.
I used to work on cars years ago, but I’m getting older now; I don’t even like messing with them anymore.
CM: What’s your dream car?
FL: My dream car is a ‘69 Chevelle Super Sport. I’ve always wanted one, but just never had the time or the money to go get one.
