NEW YORK – Standard Motor Products (SMP) has selected the winner of its “Are You TechSmart?” scholarship search. Marcos Gutierrez of Oakland, Calif., enrolled in the Automotive Technology Program at Chabot College, will receive the $5,000 scholarship to use toward his education.

Gutierrez was chosen from a field of student applicants from 31 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Each applicant was judged on relevancy, creativity and thoughtfulness in regard to the automotive industry by TechSmart Technician John Filippone, master technician and owner of Piedmont Tire and Auto. “Based on his understanding of the importance of keeping in touch with emerging technologies, I think Mr. Gutierrez is the best candidate for the scholarship,” said Filippone.

Phil Hutchens, vice president engine management marketing, SMP, added, “With the ‘Are You TechSmart?’ scholarship search, we were looking for a student who embodies the characteristics of the TechSmart brand. In other words, someone who is passionate about technical advances, innovation and meeting the challenges of automotive technology.”
