For the past decade or so, the vast majority of late-model vehicles have rolled off the assembly line with an iridium-tipped spark plug.

Not only is the spark plug responsible for ensuring that the vehicle starts when you turn the key or push the “start” button, but it also plays a crucial role in attaining optimum engine performance and dependable operation.

For decades, the standard spark plug featured a nickel-alloy outer material fused to a copper-cored center electrode. While spark plugs today still utilize a copper core, in recent years we’ve seen a shift to spark plugs that feature electrodes tipped with precious metals such as platinum or iridium.
