Zinc dialkyldithiophosphate is a combination of zinc and phosphorus, and it’s a lot easier to use the acronym ZDDP or ZDP when talking about what it can do for your customers’ engines.
When placed under pressure – between a flat-tappet camshaft and a lifter, for example – ZDDP attaches to the metal surface and becomes a sacrificial wear material that prevents the metal from being worn away. It’s also a corrosion inhibitor.
