Federal-Mogul Powertrain Expands Manufacturing Footprint In China

Company opens new state-of-the-art systems protection facility in Changshu; will supply products for automotive, high-speed rail and aviation sectors.

SHANGHAI – Federal-Mogul Powertrain, a division of Federal-Mogul Holdings Corp., opened a new Systems Protection manufacturing facility in Changshu, China, to support domestic customers in the automotive, high-speed rail and aviation sectors.

“Federal-Mogul Powertrain is committed to developing and providing solutions that help our customers improve fuel economy, reduce emissions and enhance vehicle performance,” said Janice Maiden, senior vice president and general manager, Systems Protection, Federal-Mogul Powertrain. “China is an important operations base for Federal-Mogul. The new plant expands our manufacturing footprint in the region to serve local customers there.”

The new 7,000-square-meter plant will provide additional production capacity for Federal-Mogul’s complete systems protection portfolio, including its Thermflex exhaust insulating sleeve. Thermflex protective sleeves, made with a special natural fiber, can effectively retain heat in exhaust pipes for emissions to be sufficiently decomposed. In addition to passenger car applications, Thermflex is also used for domestic public transit vehicles, mainly for reducing particulate matter (PM) and carbon monoxide.

“Federal-Mogul’s Thermflex systems protection products help vehicle manufacturers improve environmental protection, thermal insulation and durability needs,” said Kouichi Satoh, Systems Protection global managing director, Federal-Mogul Powertrain. “We provide customized solutions to meet different performance requirements. Our systems protection products are also widely used in the high-speed rail and aviation industries in China.”

The new facility will enable Federal-Mogul to customize its systems protection products for specific local customer applications, providing important benefits such as abrasion protection, thermal management, electromagnetic interference shielding, noise suppression and shock absorption. These products have been in use on China ARJ regional jets and are planned for future domestic aircraft programs.

Federal-Mogul opened its first operation in China in 1995. Today, the company’s Powertrain Division operates seven wholly owned manufacturing facilities, along with several joint venture operations and more than 4,000 employees serving customers throughout the region. Its Asia Pacific Technical Center in Shanghai is one of Federal-Mogul’s 16 globally networked engineering and technical centers, and provides leading-edge technologies and services to domestic and foreign transportation manufacturers throughout Asia.
