WATCH: Things To Remember About Dual-Mass Flywheels

As with all mechanical parts in a vehicle, things can go wrong. Here are some conditions to check for when diagnosing a dual-mass flywheel.

Recently, I did a video all about the dual-mass flywheel, a fantastic piece of machinery that works with the transmission to absorb vibrations, reduce noise, increase comfort, and save fuel, all while relieving the crankshaft and gearbox.

Unfortunately, as with all mechanical parts in a vehicle, things can go wrong. Here are some conditions to check for when diagnosing a dual-mass flywheel. The clutch creates surges of power and the flywheel absorbs them, in order to smooth out the power and reduce slipping. Vehicles with diesel engines benefit from dual-mass flywheels because they isolate spikes in torque from the crankshaft under load.
