Did you know that in just one hour of driving, more than 26,000 gallons of outside air can circulate through the interior of your vehicle? That’s all the more reason your customers should replace their cabin air filter on a regular basis.

The aftermarket offers two types of cabin air filters: particle filters and activated carbon filters. Cabin air filters with activated carbon elements have the added benefit of removing harmful exhaust fumes, dirt and dust as well as high ozone concentrations and unpleasant smells. Look for a brand with a pleat geometry that’s designed for a long service life, and a low flow resistance that minimizes the load on the blowers.

So, how often does the cabin air filter need to be replaced? That depends on the filter’s service life and operating conditions. However, most manufacturers recommend replacing them at least once a year.

Here’s the good news: Changing a cabin air filter is the ultimate DIY job. Most most can be removed by using a screwdriver and by lifting a couple of tabs. As always, your customers should consult their owner’s manual for the instructions. But I can tell you from experience, it’s an easy job. If I can do it – anybody can!
