Is Cheaper Better?

If cheaper rates are key to pulling in more customers, why doesn’t the aftermarket have all the dealership service and repair business?

I have a 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse RS.

I have a 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse RS. I bought the car with a bad motor. I got another motor and swapped them out. Now the thing that gets me is that I have to spray starting fluid into the throttle body to get it to start, but only for the first time. Once it starts and runs, it drives great. I can even shut it off and re-crank it a few minutes later without any problem. It only seems to need starting fluid to crank it the first time or after it has been off for about an hour.

What can cause this?

I was wondering if the MAP could have something to do with it — maybe not reading the correct barometric pressure or something? Maybe a faulty ECU?

What is flex fuel?

Flex fuel refers to a vehicle with an engine that can run on both gasoline and an ethanol-based fuel, typically E85. Flex fuel vehicles are huge in Brazil, but haven’t really caught in the U.S. One reason could be that Brazil’s ethanol, which is sugar-cane based, is much more efficient that the corn-based ethanol used

Universal anti-freeze in general terms is only supposed to be used for topping off a system, to my knowledge. Always best to use what is recommended by the car manufacturer. Read everything on the label on any product you are recommending, as well as err on the side of caution. Call the manufacturer if you

Bearing 101

Why is there not a lock nut included in my bearing kit? The lock nut can be of different construction and functionality. In cases where the lock nut is not included in the wheel bearing kit, the locking nut may be reusable. Prior to replacement, examine the threads and nut for any signs of wear.

An All-Access Pass?

Long before the age of Internet access, Samuel Johnson, the great 18th-century English author and literary scholar, said, “Knowledge is of two kinds. We know a subject ourselves, or we know where we can find information upon it.” Johnson’s observation accurately describes the automotive repair information access issues of today because, although an auto mechanic

Clutches: Getting a Grip

When a customer needs a replacement clutch, what kind of clutch should you recommend? One that fits, works and feels the same as the original? Or one that can handle more torque and provide better all-round performance than the original? The worst thing you can do is recommend a cheap replacement clutch, or one that’s
