WARREN, Mich. – Audi AG and Bosch Automotive Service Solutions have entered into a licensing agreement to allow Bosch access to Audi Event Data Recorder (EDR) system information. EDR access will be used to communicate with Audi passenger vehicles via the Bosch Crash Data Retrieval (CDR) tool, used to analyze and understand vehicle behavior before and during crashes.
Bosch’s CDR is used by law enforcement, accident investigators and insurance companies to retrieve EDR information from vehicles produced by several automakers.
Auto manufacturers of passenger cars and light trucks that store EDR information are required to comply with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) final rule, 49 C.F.R Part 563, dated September 2012. This federal regulation requires manufacturers to ensure that a commercially available tool is available to read out EDR information within 90 days of the first sale of a vehicle into the U.S. market.
“Adding Audi vehicles to our list of supported vehicle manufacturers further expands our support to the government, the automotive industry and the other related industries that rely on EDR information.” said Bernd Heppner, vice president of Bosch Automotive Service Solutions.
Bosch leads the market in EDR readout technology. Since 2000, Bosch CDR products have been trusted internationally by law enforcement, crash researchers, auto manufacturers and government agencies to access EDR information on a wide range of passenger cars, light trucks and SUVs.
A Bosch CDR Tool and software subscription allows the user to retrieve EDR records from many of the vehicles on the road today.
“Bosch continues to work with manufacturers to readout EDR data on an ongoing basis to strengthen the usability of the CDR Tool,” added Heppner.
The CDR Tool and related software are available commercially for purchase in the U.S. and Canada.
