In the previous video, we talked about how the overrunning alternator decoupler, or OAD pulley, acts like a tuning device for the engine’s accessory drive-belt system. An OAD pulley helps improve fuel economy, reduce noise and vibration, and boost component life.

Here’s what you might not know: There is no acceptable alternative to an OAD pulley. The patented design offers exclusive benefits that can’t be provided by another type of pulley. If your professional or DIY customers use another type of pulley on a replacement alternator that requires an OAD pulley, it could lead to serious and expensive issues in the drive-belt system.

So, when a customer needs a replacement alternator, make sure you ask them if the alternator requires an overrunning alternator decoupler pulley.

Also, you might want to talk to your alternator supplier and verify that every alternator requiring an OAD pulley is equipped with one. As the technology becomes more prevalent, you might even want to remind your supplier that each alternator order should include an OAD pulley.

Here’s the bottom line: If the vehicle requires an OAD pulley, make sure the alternator you install features the same technology. Anything else is just asking for trouble.
