When a Gen 1 hub bearing is worn or damaged, in many cases, the other related components will need to be replaced as well.

You’ll find Generation 1 hub bearings in driven front and rear wheels, and in integral drum designs on the non-driven wheels of smaller cars. 

These cartridge-style wheel bearings can have a tapered or ball design. They’re double-row angular contact bearings, typically with a split inner ring. The split inner ring means each half of the bearing can rotate independently of each other if rotated by hand. 

Typically, these bearings are pre-adjusted, greased and sealed for life.
