In a four-stroke internal combustion engine, the camshafts rotate at half the speed of the crankshaft. Camshafts are linked to the crankshaft in one of three ways: a timing chain or multiple chains; a timing belt or belts; or timing gears.
Over the years, we’ve seen automakers shift from predominantly using timing chains to predominantly using timing belts and then back to timing chains. Even though timing chains are popular right now, there still are many vehicles on the road that utilize a timing belt to link the camshafts and the crankshaft.
