Taiwan’s annual 4-in-1 mega automotive and motorcycle show in Taipei, held April 19-23, broke records in both attendance of visitors and exhibitors.

The capital city hosted a total of 3,772 booths for all four shows with 45,260 visitors attending the combined AMPA/ AutoTronics Taipei/Motorcycle Taiwan/EV Taiwan shows, show organizers say. The shows were held at the Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center and the Taipei World Trade Center Exhibition Hall 1. The top three countries with the highest number of foreign visitors were: Japan – 1,657; Mainland China – 1,018 and the United States – 541.

This year, the focus was on telematics. The island has long been a huge exporter of auto parts to other countries and while it intends to maintain that status, it has a new focus on telematics components, aiming to serve human and machine-driven vehicles.

Paul Chou, secretary general of the Taiwan Telematics Industry Association, sat down with journalists from around the world at the show to explain the island’s focus on telematics. He likened Taiwan’s approach to telematics much in the way that the PC industry emerged in the 1980s and 90s. The island eventually became the key supplier of quality components for most of the computers made today and has repeated those successes with the smartphone market, he said.

“Taiwan won’t be absent from the coming autonomous driving market,” he told reporters.

A number of awards were given to companies for product innovation, as happens each year.
