MEYLE Receives Automechanika Innovation Award for Slot Bushing Kit

The MEYLE-HD slotted bushing kit enables technicians to replace defective bushings on the BMW rear control arm separately in pairs, rather than replacing the entire control arm.

MEYLE has received a 2018 Automechanika Innovation Award for the MEYLE-HD slot bushing kit.

The award, presented Sept. 11 at Automechanika Frankfurt, was for the Repair & Maintenance category.

“With the MEYLE-HD slot bushing kit including tool, the company was able to assert itself against numerous competitors, including well-known OE and aftermarket manufacturers,” Hamburg-based MEYLE said. “With the service kit, consisting of the pre-compressed and ready-to-install MEYLE‑HD slot bushings and a suitable installation tool, MEYLE offers an economical and ecological alternative to replacing the complete BMW rear-axle control arm. This enables selective replacement of the bushings in selected BMW 5 Series, 6 Series, 7 Series and X5 models.”

Now in their 25th year, the Automechanika Innovation Awards recognize progressive and forward-looking innovations in the automotive industry.

“We are pleased to present MEYLE with the award in the Repair & Maintenance category,” said Olaf Mußhoff, director of Automechanika Frankfurt. “The MEYLE-HD kit meets all award criteria for an environmentally friendly, sustainable and service-oriented solution – a real innovation, which we are therefore pleased to honor with an award.”

Engineers and product managers from the MEYLE chassis and steering team developed the MEYLE-HD kit. Based on the MEYLE-HD concept “Better than OE,” the impetus for the product came from the analysis of the repair on the BMW control arm, according to MEYLE. In contrast to the OE version, defective bushings on the BMW rear control arm can be replaced separately in pairs with the MEYLE kit – a repair solution that’s not yet available from the OE side with the appropriate tool. Previously, the only way to repair defective bushings was to replace the entire control arm.

“The Innovation Award is a very special award for us, of which we are very proud,” said André Sobottka, board member for sales, marketing and communication at MEYLE. “Especially in our anniversary year, in which we also celebrate the 60th anniversary of the holding company Wulf Gaertner Autoparts AG, the award is a great recognition for the good and close cooperation of our MEYLE engineers in Hamburg and in our production facilities.

“Due to our high technical understanding and our know-how as a manufacturer, we are in a position to offer further developed parts for the market and to create tailor-made solutions. We know the market requirements and the daily routine in the workshop very well and therefore focus our product development on solutions that are precisely tailored to the needs of the workshop employee. With the MEYLE-HD kit we have once again proven this and offer as MEYLE another exclusive solution for the aftermarket, with which workshop employees quickly become the ‘Driver’s Best Friend.’”

Customer Service: How It’s Done

Customer service should be your number one priority, and it all starts with the greeting.

This is always an important topic to discuss, because I consider excellent customer service one of the most important tools you can have to earn trust, respect and repeat business from the customers that come through your door. Whether that customer is do-it-yourselfer from across town or the professional repair shop across the street, your business depends on a solid relationship. It’s a subject that I am passionate about, and it’s one that many people are losing touch with. Whether you are communicating to someone in person, on the phone or using some type of social media, good customer service and bad can both exist. You can’t afford the latter, so this is the first in a series of topics which can and should be shared from the front of the shop to the back. No matter which role you hold, you represent the shop and yourself. Customer service should be your number one priority.First on the list is the greeting. From the second a customer walks in the door, they need to know you appreciate them coming in and how important they are to your business. First impressions are everything and here’s the correct way to do it each and every time: look them directly in the eye, smile and say hello!Of course, you can say “Good morning” or “Welcome to Joe’s Autocare,” but it should be a formal greeting and the most important thing is that you have smiled, looked them in the eye and recognized that they have walked through the door. You should always retain a formal greeting until you are on a first-name basis with a customer. Only once you have established that level of relationship is it OK to use the less formal greeting of “Hi,” followed by the person’s name. This greeting does more than just indicate respect and appreciation for someone walking through the door. Most likely there are customers both new and old who are in earshot of your conversation. For newer customers, this continues to build rapport and reinforce their positive view of your shop; they see that you demonstrate respect and treat everyone in the same manner. For repeat customers, even ones that have been coming for years, the greeting is important because the way you treat them is the reason they continue to come. And when a long-time customer comes in and you greet them with “Hi [First Name],” this indicates your appreciation for them and that you’re glad to see them as a person, more than just a customer. New customers that witness this will see that your repeat customers are comfortable enough to be on a first-name basis, another indication of the trust they have in you.
