is it better to follow the “change oil” light on the dash or to follow the usual 3 month/3000 mile oil change routine?

As long as you check your oil level and condition between oil changes on a regular basis, there is usually no harm in following the 5,000-mile or more intervals recommended by the OEM.

The problem occurs that as the vehicle gets older and more mileage on it there are many other wear items that need to be checked and the oil change interval is a  good time to check them. Our shop recommends 4,000-mile service intervals which include a 24-point inspection as well.
