I have an ’04 Ford F-150 with the 5.4l and the trans seems to slip and make a popping noise when trying to accelerate. What could that be?

There are a lot of things it could be. But, since transmissions are so tricky and fragile to mess with, I’d take it to a professional transmission technician and let them look at it. You’ll be glad you did.
