AN ASE CERTIFIED FRIEND OF MINE AND I GOT INTO A DISCUSSION. HE SWEARS UP AND DOWN THAT SYNTHETIC SHOULD OIL ONLY BE USED IN NEWER ENGINES POST 2000 AND THAT IF ONCE SYNTHETIC OIL IS USED IN AN ENGINE, IT MUST BE CONTINUED TO BE USED. I.E - ONCE YOU GO SYNTHETIC YOU CANT GO BACK? MY UNDERSTANDING IS THAT YOU CAN USE SYNTHETIC OIL IN ANY ENGINE AS LONG AS IT HAS NO MAJOR LEAKS SUCH AS REAR MAINS, AND TIMING CHAIN COVERS NO MATTER WHAT YEAR THE ENGINE IS- FOR EXAMPLE I HAVE A 1987 FORD RANGER STX WITH THE FUEL INJECTED 2.9l WITH 72,000 ORIGINAL MILES AND HAS NO MAJOR OIL LEAKS I CHOSE CONVENTIONAL SINCE THAT IS THE RECCOMENDED OIL WHILE I WAS TOLD THAT I CAN USE SYNTHETIC. WHAT IS THE CORRECT ANSWER?

Synthetic oil can be used to extend oil changes in any engine. That is its primary benefit. Our shop uses synthetic blend oil in our regular oil-changes. If a customer has an oil consumption problem and must add between changes, we suggest regular non-synthetic oil, just as a cost savings. Full synthetic, synthetic blend and natural oil are all compatible and in a pinch, it is much better to mix types of oil when adding than to
allow the engine to run low on oil while you search for the right type!
